European Women in Finance - A Note From the Producer

EWiF banner-01

After the huge success of Women of The Square Mile in London earlier this year, where we welcomed over 400 attendees, pushed for progress in the banking and finance sector and saw women (and men) really engaging with the gender diversity conversation, I am thrilled to be taking the Women in Finance World Series to Europe.

European Women in Finance looks set to be another catalyst for change, empowering individuals and assisting companies in reshaping their culture. The event takes place on 28th and 29th November 2018 at RAI Conference Centre, Amsterdam.

Why are we holding this event?

The Financial Services sector is one of the largest and most important industries, yet the representation of women within the sector is shocking. With just 18% of European EXCO members being women, it is clearly time for a change.

Looking at the present day and onwards to the future, the business case for fairness, equality and inclusion is more obvious than ever. There should be no doubting the need for diversity, the question we must now be asking ourselves is how we improve and increase female representation.

Too few women get to the top, but why? What can we do to try to get more women into leadership? Just talking about these issues isn’t going to solve them, we need to assess the solutions, take action and move the conversation from why, to how. We have to show that senior management isn’t a ‘man’s job’. Studies show that women are leaving their jobs because the culture isn’t right. All this needs to change.

We all have to play an active role in the progression of the finance industry and take responsibility. European Women in Finance will provide insight and expertise on how we can make a positive and significant impact, push for progress and ultimately be a catalyst for change.

Individuals need to be empowered, and the industry needs to be reshaped towards true diversity and inclusion. Through this event, we will give you the inspiration and encouragement to take this movement further into the workplace and provide you with opportunities for strengthening it.

What to expect

We want all attendees to be inspired by industry leaders, and by attending this event, you will be making a step to ensure that gender diversity is achieved within your organisation, and consequently the banking and finance sector. You will hear from successful women in finance about how to get into the boardroom, the importance of an inclusive culture, digital disruption and how to tackle the mid-career conflict, to name a few.

You will leave this event feeling empowered to encourage all other women within the industry to stand firm and make young women not think twice about joining the industry. All of this whilst meeting like-minded individuals, and sharing experiences from a male-dominated sector.

I am thrilled to have Leonique van Houwelingen, recently appointed CEO of BNY Mellon SA/NV discussing leadership development. She will explore how, as leaders, you can use your personal routes to leadership to drive the change you want to see. We need to look at the indicators in the financial services industry more broadly that feed into the ‘why we are still talking about gender diversity’. Leonique will also provide practical steps and solutions that people can take away to drive the change they want to see.

Another highlight is Brenda Trenowden, who will examine the business case for diversity. In 2015 Brenda took over from Helena Morrissey as Global Chair of the 30% Club, where she works closely with leading Chairs and CEOs around the world to increase the representation of women in senior roles and throughout organisations. She has a lot of experience helping organisations to change their cultures and will provide us with insight into the importance of creating inclusive environments.

This conference is not just about diversity and inclusion, we will also provide content on what is really driving the industry at the moment, and the future of banking and finance. Whether it’s the impact of Millennials on big banks, looking to satisfy the appetite of young consumers for simple digital banking solutions, or the era of digital change and its impact on the wider banking and finance industry, there should be something for everyone.
